RussellMUCK was formed when [[Akili]], desiring to work on [[WikiPedia:MUF_programming_language|MUF]] programming with greater permissions than he possessed on the [[http://www.tlkmuck.org|TLKMuck]] server he had an account on, downloaded and started up a copy of NeonMUCK, a now-defunct derivative of the !FuzzBall MUCK code, which itself was a derivative of [[WikiPedia:TinyMUCK]].

Originally called Akili's MUCK, the growing number of users (primarily [[Calin]] and [[Tamra]], although others agreed) preferred [[Russell]]MUCK, and he fell to peer pressure.

RussellMUCK is, as the name suggests a MUCK server, though it is not an actual acronym (though once thought to be Multi-User Chat Kingdom). MUCKs are largely based upon the [[WikiPedia:MUD|MUD, or Multi-User Dungeon]] server architecture, with the combat systems removed.  MUCK is thus a play on the word 'MUD'.  Our server now runs on [[http://sourceforge.net/projects/protomuck/|ProtoMUCK]] in a [[WikiPedia:Linux]] operating environment.

The server has historically been by invite only, although guest logins are currently allowed on a trial basis.

It could also be said that RussellMUCK was the impetus behind the creation of SplitReflection, and the primary reason how all of its users have kept in touch, despite not living in the same physical location.  In other words, it's all Akili's fault.
